Tiger Woods was in position entering the third round of the 142nd British Open, at 2 under par and one shot out of the 36-hole lead. He played grinding golf in the first two days, delivering rounds of 69-71 and a "clinic" with his irons, according to playing partner Graeme McDowell.

LEADERBOARD: 142nd British Open ROUND 2: Jimenez rises to the top

But he has been in the mix entering the weekend quite a few times during his five-year major drought and has faded on the weekend.

Woods is playing with Lee Westwood of England, seeking his first major title. We'll track them hole by by hole. ESPN has the broadcast.

No. 2, 364 yards, par 4: Both Westwood and Woods are comfortably in the fairway off the tee. Woods' approach finds the green, but Woods didn't like it and loudly exclaims his displeasure with words that would not please the Christian community ... ESPN's commentary then discusses whether he doesn't realize the microphones are picking it up ... or doesn't care. They settled on doesn't care. Westwood's approach came up way short leaving a monstrous birdie putt. Really good lag putt from 40 feet will give him an easy par. Woods' birdie putt from closer than Westwood's finds the bottom. Surprising birdie perhaps after his disappointment with the approach. Woods now has a share of the lead at -3. Westwood pops in his par putt to stay at -2.

No. 1, 447 yards, par 4: Woods has played this hole over par this week, a bogey on Thursday (after firing his opening tee shot into the deep rough), and a par on Friday. Westwood birdied it both days. Woods fires an iron down the center of the fairway. Westwood does the same. And they're off. Approach shots are safely on the green, Westwood below the hole and Woods past. Each will have 25 to 30 footers for birdie. Westwood cozies his putt up for a tap-in par. Woods knocks it two within 15 inches ... but no trouble. Par-Par and both stay at 2 under.
