CHICAGO -- The Detroit Tigers hold a small lead over the Cleveland Indians in the division race. Losing the reigning American League Most Valuable Player for any amount of time would make the pennant race that much tougher.
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera left the game during the bottom of the fifth inning Monday night in the first game of a four-game series against the Chicago White Sox. The official reason he was removed from the game was not immediately known.
Cabrera has been battling a bad back near his left hip for some time now. He appeared to wince after scoring a run in the top of the fifth, then barely moved when Adam Dunn singled to his right in to lead off the bottom of the inning. One out later, Cabrera walked off the field along with head athletic trainer Kevin Rand. Don Kelly took his place at third base.
Cabrera has played in all but one game this season. He sat out one start in Toronto shortly after the back issue developed. Cabrera turned down an offer to participate in the Home Run Derby last week but started in the All-Star Game.
Cabrera is hitting .358 with 31 home runs and 96 RBIs this season for the Tigers.
